A Note Concerning the Turbulent Boundary Layer Drag at Large Reynolds Numbers
نویسندگان
چکیده
A correlation is obtained for the drag coefficient c ′f of the turbulent boundary layer as a function of the effective boundary layer Reynolds number Re that we previously introduced. A comparison is performed also with another correlation for the drag coefficient as a function of the traditional Reynolds number Reθ , based on the momentum thickness of the boundary layer proposed recently by R. D. Watson, R. M. Hall and J. B. Anders (nasa Langley Research Center) on the basis of different set of experimental data. We show that the correlation obtained by us agrees with experimental data from the Illinois Institute of Technology, but is incompatible with the data obtained in the Royal Institute of Technology at Stockholm. On the other hand, both sets of data are in disagreement with the Langley correlation.

The boundary layer of swimming fish.
Tangential and normal velocity profiles of the boundary layer surrounding live swimming fish were determined by digital particle tracking velocimetry, DPTV. Two species were examined: the scup Stenotomus chrysops, a carangiform swimmer, and the smooth dogfish Mustelus canis, an anguilliform swimmer. Measurements were taken at several locations over the surfaces of the fish and throughout comple...
متن کاملInfluence of Afterbody and Boundary Layer on Cavitating Flow
The characteristics of a cavitation water tunnel test setup and the experiments of cavitation around different models are given in this paper. Models of test are formed from combination of head and variable length afterbody. The experiments are performed initially with the smooth head and then with the roughened head. Cavitation initiates both in the wake and after the head. If the nose of mode...
متن کاملAerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...
متن کاملA Novel Similarity Solution of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow over a Flat Plate
In this paper, the similarity solution of turbulent boundary layer flow on the flat plate with zero pressure gradients is presented. By employing similarity variables the governing partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary ones with inconsistent coefficients and solved numerically with the use of Runge–Kutta and shooting methods in conjunction with trial and error procedure. Fo...
متن کاملUnsteady turbulent boundary layers in swimming rainbow trout.
The boundary layers of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, swimming at 1.02±0.09 L s(-1) (mean±s.d., N=4), were measured by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique at a Reynolds number of 4×10(5). The boundary layer profile showed unsteadiness, oscillating above and beneath the classical logarithmic law of the wall with body motion. Across the entire surface regions that were measured, l...
